Leo Ferrine

Name: Leo Ferrine
Position: CB
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 180 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.4
Hometown/School: St. Peter's Prep, Jersey City, NJ

Leo plays wide-receiver and cornerback for Saint Peter's Prep in addition to returning both kickoffs and punts.

"I have 25 catches for 610 yards right now and 8 receiving touchdowns," Ferrine said. "I brought back 2 kicks and a punt [for touchdowns] and I returned 2 fumble recoveries and I brought back an interception return. I have 3 interceptions so far this year, but I'm not sure how many tackles."

Ferrine's efforts have contributed greatly to the success of the 10-0 Marauders. St. Peter's Prep will face Don Bosco Prep in the semi-final round of the NJSIAA playoffs this Saturday.

Until recently, Leo was only being recruited to play cornerback at the collegiate level.

"It's cornerback, but as the season's been going on and since I've been doing well at receiver, now I'm starting to get [looked at for] both positions."

He does not have a position preference.

So far, Virginia and Rutgers have extended written scholarship offers. After the season, Ferrine, with the help of his current coaching staff, plans to send out tape to see what other schools might tender written offers. It's his belief that he did not get promoted well enough last year at Bishop Francis Essex Catholic.

Several other schools have shown serious interest in the Jersey athlete.

"Penn State, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. That's basically all of the schools I'm interested in."

So far, Leo has taken unofficial visits to both Rutgers (game verses Virginia Tech) and Penn State.

He attended the Nittany Lions' contest against the Ohio State Buckeyes on the 1st of November.

"I didn't get to look around. I left at half time because I had somewhere to go, but I visited there before, so I've gotten to see what the school looks like. I know it's a big campus and everything I saw, I liked it."

Ferrine also attended the PSU Nike Camp in April and their football camp this summer.

Although his father is the cousin of PSU assistant coach Brian Norwood, he is being recruited by Fran Ganter, the Assistant Head Coach at Penn State, who Leo says calls him regularly. His father also talks frequently with Coach Norwood.

Do the Nittany Lions appear close to offering?

"They say the same thing that all of the other colleges say. They say, 'We're going to offer you' verbally, but then after the season, once they get a hold of the tape, they say [they'll give him a] written [offer]."

The Cavaliers, however, are his current favorite.

"Right now, I'd have to say probably UVA, just because it's not only football but it's also academics that they think about. They're one of the top 5 schools academically in the country, so that's really important.

"I'm going there November 29 for a game (Virginia Tech)."

Where does PSU rank among his favorites?

"They're pretty high. I mean Penn State is a school I'm interested in. I see nothing wrong with them. I know the program is down now, but every team is able to have a bad year one year and be good the next year."

Ferrine does not yet have any official visits set up.
