Postseason - Round 2!
The Scarlet Knights rallied to defeat Temple University Wednesday evening at the Rutgers Athletic Center before less than 3500 diehards. Despite the somewhat cavernous look to the RAC those present cheered with enthusiasm and passion as Rutgers overcame a slow start.
Up next for the Scarlet Knights is Big East rival West Virginia. With Spring Break coming to a close the students will be back in full force rocking the West End of the RAC as they have on so many previous occasions. The story seems to be slightly skewed for the rest of the general fan base whose belief in this team and perceived validity of this tournament still seems in doubt.
As Rutgers fans we have a tendency to pride ourselves on having been there through it all. On being continuously disappointed and let down. On having our Scarlet hearts broken time and again. On having the relentless cycle repeat itself, ad infinitum. Sound familiar, right? Well, it shouldn't.
What is at stake versus West Virginia is a spot in the Final 8 of the NIT, just 1 additional win shy of a trip to the greatest arena in the world, Madison Square Garden. Considering that this contest can catapult Rutgers to its most successful post-season since the 1991 NCAA tournament, it should be easy to see the uniqueness of this situation.
The easy thing to do is to continue to brood and mope on the NCAAs that could have been. To shun this team because you firmly believe mediocrity is its destiny and glory is all too distant. How ironic all this seems considering we pride ourselves on being so loyal.
However, what if you were to don that Scarlet tee you put away for the season a couple of weeks ago, and head on over to the RAC this Monday? The right thing to do is to invite that neighbor that's always wanted to go but never had the opportunity. The right thing to do is pack the RAC to its brim. To bring your passion and remember your loyalty to Rutgers. The season is hardly over - infact, the most prolific postseason run since the fabled Final Four year could be well on its way. How could you miss that?
For some of us it's time to start acting like the fans we want to believe we are. Time to stop the moaning and groaning. For the rest just keep the ship moving. Your support is acknowledged, appreciated, and very much needed. Your energy is the passion behind the Glory of the RAC.
Rutgers will host West Virginia on Monday, March 22nd, at 7:30PM. Where will you be? Cheering along your fellow fans, I hope.
