Name: Anthony Scirrotto
Position: DB
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 185 pounds
Hometown/School: West Deptford HS, Westville, NJ

Anthony Scirrotto is a highly recruited two sport athlete. Last season he played QB and DB and led West Deptford to an undefeated season and the South Jersey Group II championship. Anthony threw for 949 yards including 12 touchdown passes while also rushing for over 500 yards and 10 touchdowns. On defense he nabbed 6 interceptions, raising his career total to 21, and participated in 80 tackles.

In baseball, he plays shortstop and pitches occasionally and is being recruited by major schools on the diamond as well. Scirrotto hits for both average and power and has shown his speed on the base paths, stealing 45 bases without being caught before being thrown out in a recent game.

On top of it all, Anthony is a very good student with a 5.17 average (5.0 scale) and 1110 on his SATS. He has already received scholarship offers from Wisconsin and Stanford. Is anyone else close to offering?

"Penn State. Boston College. Northwestern, maybe."

Has he taken any visits yet? "I was at Rutgers last month and I was at Penn State a week ago (both for junior days). I was supposed to go to the Nike combine there, but I had a baseball tournament the next day so I couldn't attend that."

Is Rutgers interested? "I hear from Coach Schiano a lot. It's a nice place, I like it there." But they haven't offered yet? "No."

How did the visit go at Penn State?

"I went with my dad and my brother. It was real nice. We got there early, so we sat and watched a baseball game. Then I met up with Coach Vanderlinden. They took us on a tour of the facilities first and then we toured the campus. They took us into the stadium and had a barbecue. They actually let us run through the tunnel and go on the field and check it out and see what it would be like.

"We also met Joe Paterno. He actually sat down at my table and was eating with me a little bit. I sat down with the defensive back coach and watched some game films. It was the safeties coach (Brian Norwood). It was pretty cool."

We asked Scirrotto who was recruiting him the hardest.

He told us, "Penn State, really hard. Stanford, really hard. Maryland, Wisconsin."

Anthony is being recruited by Ron Vanderlinden. What has Coach Vanderlinden said about the possibility of an offer?

"Coach Vanderlinden said if he could he would offer me right now. Coach Paterno wanted to see me in person before anything was set. They saw me. I don't know how it's going from there. But hopefully I get one soon."

What did Joe Paterno talk to you about?

"He said that he actually watched my highlight film and he doesn't watch a lot of film. He was impressed with it. Hopefully, if I was interested maybe I could become a Nittany Lion."

Any other visits planned?

"I would love to go out to Stanford. I was just talking to the coach about that a little earlier. Hopefully, I'm going to go to Virginia and go to a camp in the middle of June. Maryland is having a camp that I might be attending in July."

Have you heard much from Virginia?

"Yeah. Coach Groh. I hear from him a lot. He actually came to watch me play baseball."

Do you want to play both football and baseball in college?

"If I had the opportunity to play both, I definitely would. If it's one, its going to be football."

What teams stand out to you right now?

"Penn State. I really liked it there. Stanford. If I want to stay close I'm leaning more toward Penn State or Maryland or Virginia. If I want to go away it's definitely going to be Stanford."

What's your thinking on staying home vs. going away?

"It's kind of in the middle right now. Most of my family is around here. But, we've had family live in California before."

What do you like about Penn State?

"I just like the atmosphere. Everything revolves around football. The stadium was beautiful, it was so big. All the fans that go there. Joe Paterno. Just to see him and shake his hand was an honor. Just because he's such a respected person and coach. In college football he's a legend. It was just great to get up there."

How about Stanford?

"I haven't seen it, but I'm sure it's beautiful. The mountains, beach, all in one area. People like John Elway playing at Stanford. They've got the #1 team in the nation for baseball. And, their academics are great. If I go there, I'll probably be playing both (baseball and football)."

Do you have a timetable for making a decision?

"I'm not going to commit early. I'm to take my time and make sure the decision I make is the one that's best for me."
