Jaron Griffin, 6-6,
195, SF/PF, Haledon, NJ, Manchester
I caught up with Rutgers latest verbal, Jaron Griffin. Jaron is a friendly and well spoken young man who had this to say about his verbal to Rutgers.
Why Rutgers? Why now?
"I felt like I was ready to make my pick and that was the right school for me."
Who else offered? Who was about to offer?
"Rhode Island, West Virginia, Miami, Fairfield all offered me. Penn State, Virginia were about to offer."
What impressed you about Rutgers?
" I liked the coaching staff. They didn't promise me a start. They told me that I would have to come in and work. I liked that."
What impressed you about Waters?
"He is an honest man. Everything he did told me he was an honest man."
Did Rutgers appearance in the NIT (going to the finals) have any influence on you?
"A little bit because the team is so young and they got all the way to the finals. They have good young players and they'll continue to do well."
Do you have any current friends on the team?
" Not yet. I know the players and I'll get closer to them as time goes on."
Do you have any friends who might join with you in going to RU?
" I know JR Inman a little. We talk a little. We think that with both of us on the court we could be a problem. I bring versatility. I can do a lot of things. I can hit the three and I can hit the boards. He is the same type of player as me but he is six foot eight."
Last Season Honors
"I was fourth team all state, Ocean County player of the year by the Star Ledger and Ocean County player of the year by the Ocean County Observer. First team All County."
Last Season's Statistics
"22 points a game, 13 rebounds a game."
As a junior he was the MVP in the 2005 game of the Eddie Griffin Challenge when he had 19 points. Will run, rebound and block shots. Will have to develop his perimeter touch but a potential high-major prospect.
