Oates' Trip Goes Well Up North

The lack of big men in the class of 2005 is evident when making the rounds during the AAU season ... so John Oates has a big decision ahead.

John Oates, a 6-foot-10 center from Blair Academy in New Jersey, is finishing up his family vacation up North. The hard-working big man could make a decision in the next month on his school of choice.

The plan right now is for Oates to play for Joe Mantegna's highly respected program at Blair Academy in New Jersey. Then Oates would play college basketball in 2005-2006 as a freshman.

The New York resident also has some quality offers on the table. He has already taken an unofficial visit to Seton Hall. In the past week, he took a trip to Boston College while vacationing in Massachusetts.

Several sources close to the situation told the Insiders Report the visit worked out very well and that John enjoyed his meeting with the coaching staff. So apparently, besides Seton Hall and also Rutgers, Oates has some serious interest in Boston College. All three schools have offered him a free ride.

John, rated in the Insiders Report top 50 for players in New York State, has improved his individual skills quite a bit over the past year. He jumps higher, lifts off his feet quicker, and seems to be in much better shape too. His workouts with Rich Leary have apparently been a big part of the improvement.

So, due to his size and improvement, Oates has had some offers too to play college basketball this season. When St. John's head coach Norm Roberts took over the Red Storm program, he immediately tried to nail down Oates for a chance to play this season.
