An all-league selection, Mike Schmeding is about to become the latest in a long line of men from the Schmeding family to play Division I football. Mike's father played for Arizona State, he has an uncle and grandfather who played for Notre Dame and two uncles and a cousin who played for Boston College. Last season, Mike anchored the line for St. Mary's High School and posted a 13-3 record on the school's wrestling team. Mike bench presses close to 350 pounds and runs a 5.1 forty, possessing the strength, height and quickness to develop into a prototypical left tackle. Rutgers.Insiders.com caught up with Mike to get an update on what schools have offered him and which ones are amongst his favorites.

Schmeding currently has offers from Michigan State, Kent State, Duke, Louisville, University of Connecticut and Troy State. However, Michigan State is Mike's first choice. "They have a great campus and you can't beat playing in the Big Ten. They have also recruited me the hardest and the longest." Mike added that he receives two letters a day from MSU.

Mike's second choice is Louisville. "I really like the program, coaches and they have also recruited me for a long time." The other schools that have offered Mike are in the mix but are running behind MSU and Louisville.

To date, Mike has not received an offer from Boston College or Rutgers. Regarding Rutgers, Mike stated that he is being recruited by Coach Susan, but does not know if he will receive an offer from his state school. Mike's feelings on Rutgers are that they have "a great and up-and-coming program and the school has an excellent academic reputation, however, where I receive two letters a day from MSU, I receive on average one letter a month from Rutgers." Mike also stated that Boston College, "while showing a lot of interest," has also failed to tender an offer.

Schmeding is not sure if he will take all five official visits. "I have to decide whether to wait and see if additional offers come in or if I should verbal to MSU. At this point, I could make my decision in the next couple of weeks or wait until after the season is over."
