The ability to play multiple positions is invaluable to a football team, especially if the player has the ability to excel at both positions. Rashawn Jackson (RB/LB, 6'2"-260lbs, 4.6 forty) from St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City, New Jersey is one of those players with those unique abilities. As a result, he is one of the most coveted players in New Jersey. At LB, he is a punishing hitter and a furious run stopper. From his RB position, he has the ability to make the defense miss or run over the defenders.
Approximately three weeks ago, he visited the Rutgers campus along with a number of other top recruits. During the visit, he had an opportunity to view practice. He liked the intensity and tempo of the practice. He likes the fact that there were no players walking around and that every player who touched the ball ran to the end zone.
The Rutgers campus also caught Jackson's attention. It reminded him of home. The proximity to New York and Philadelphia is an advantage to him. He stated that it ensured that he would have other things to do in the summers and the springs. He seems to like everything about Rutgers except the fact that Rutgers does not employ a three man front on defense. The three man front is the defense that he has played in since he was in the peewee leagues. However, he stated that it is a small factor in the grand scheme of things.
Virginia and Rutgers seem to be deadlocked as his co-leaders. In his mind, Virginia has an advantage because they are away from New Jersey. Rutgers has an advantage because they have better facilities and he likes the coaching staff more.
They both have good academics and rising football programs. However, if Rutgers were to go 8-3 or 7-4, the decision would be that much easier.
Like many recruits, he hopes to be in attendance for the Michigan State game. It will depend on his coach giving him the day off from practice.
He feels the following about his other four schools:
- He has not visited but he likes the program and grew up watching them.
- Great college town.
- He has family in the area.
- One of his favorite players played football, Jamaal Lewis, at Tennessee.
- He also likes the SEC.
- Grew up watching them when they were a powerhouse.
- He likes the way they do things.
- Miami is Miami.
- He has to go nowhere for Spring Break.
- They won a lot of bowl games.
- He likes the competition level which will increase his chances of going to the league.
To date, he has not scheduled any visits. He will be narrowing his list and scheduling visits over the next few months.
He stated that the biggest factor in his decision making process is his comfort level with his role in the program along with the record of the team. After he takes all of his visits, he will make a decision.
