Derrick Smith - How Has UNH Affected Him?

Derrick Smith (Dillard HS, Fort Lauderdale, FL ) was all ready to embark on his first official visit to Rutgers for the RU/MSU contest. Hurricane Frances put those thoughts to sleep quickly. Has Smith considered re-scheduling?

We last caught up with Derrick Smith (5'11" and 175 pounds) about two weeks ago. At that time, Smith was getting ready to come up north for his first official visit but Hurricane Frances had other plans. In the meantime, scores of FL HS football games, college and professional contests were canceled or postponed.

Smith's primary position is RB, but this year he will see significant playing time at WR. During this past week, Smith had 2 receptions for 60 yards. However, Smith's Dillard HS team was upset by Deerfield, 21-8.

Coming off an impressive showing against Northwester the previous week, Dillard did not send their best effort onto the playing field. "We were kind of off. We came out slow and kind of dragging. We played Northwestern real tough the week before, kind of like you guys [referencing Rutgers]."

Recruiting wise, Smith is receiving most of the attention from a handful of schools. Michigan State was in contact with him just a couple of days before the Spartans made their trek to Piscataway, New Jersey. Smith indicated that MSU has verbally offered, though the paperwork is still being prepared.

While Rutgers' victory over the Spartans was impressive, Smith indicated that the Scarlet Knight's loss to UNH was not nearly as horrific, recruiting wise, as some may think. ""It still didn't change my feelings about Rutgers. They had an off night. It happens."

His list of college suitors has remained similar since we last talked with Smith. Listing Michigan State (verbal offer), Auburn, and South Carolina, and Eastern Michigan (offer) as some of the teams that Rutgers (offer) will do battle with in the future.

Most recently, Smith has been discussing the possibility of rescheduling his official visit to Rutgers. It seems that the trio of Dillard stars, Smith, Chris McClover (WR), and Elijah Hodge (WR), will be packing their bags for the Rutgers/West Virginia contest on October 30th. "The only visit I've been thinking about is Rutgers. I like Rutgers. It's just so early right now. But, Rutgers is pretty high on my list."

Fans should not expect a decision from Smith any time soon. For the time being, the point of emphasis is his senior season at Dillard, and most importantly, rebounding from a disappointing effort this past week.
