Last week's opponent Kent State was beaten by Akron 24-19
This is not a good omen.
Rutgers' next opponent Syracuse lost to Virginia 31-10
An over matched Syracuse team played a surprisingly close game against the Virginia Cavaliers. I had expected this game to be in the vicinity of 40-0. While the Syracuse offense produced little in this game, their defense held up enough to prevent the Cavs from turning the contest into a romp.
Up next for Syracuse is Rutgers at the Carrier Dome
Connecticut destroyed Army 40-3
Army was UConn's latest victim in their "bum of the month club" parade. I could barely watch this mismatch which failed to tell anyone much about the Huskies. You have to believe that this type of scheduling will catch up with the UConn eventually.
Connecticut hosts the Pitt Panthers next week
West Virginia defeated James Madison 45-10
This game was never close. Although Kay Jay Harris only rushed for 63 yards. Rasheed Marshall made up for it with his air attack. Marshall was 17 for 22 (77%) for 184 yards. He spread the ball between seven different receivers including seven to Chris Henry (74 yards). James Madison was held to 74 net rushing yards for the game.
If the Mountaineers ever get Harris and Marshall on the same page WVU will be unstoppable.
Next week West Virginia plays at Virginia Tech
Boston College lost to Wake Forest 17-14
With the running game not as strong as in past years, BC is relying upon the passing game more than usual. In this game they went to Grant Adams and to both their tight ends on money plays.. It wasn't enough. As the game wore on two things became apparent. One, BC's offensive line was wearing down Wake but, two, Wake was "waking up" to BC's passing tendencies and blanketing Adams and the tight ends. The Demon Deacons showed just enough defense to stop the Eagles and just enough offense enable them pull the game out on a last minute drive.
Next up for BC is a home game against Massachusetts
Temple was crushed by Toledo 45 - 17
Temple jumped out to a 10 - 0 lead and the Owls were thinking upset. At that point Toledo pulled its managers and put its team on the field.
Next week Temple plays at Bowling Green
Pittsburgh edged Furman 41-38
More vintage Pitt. After falling being Furman 31-17, the Panthers staged a furious fourth quarter comeback to avoid an embarrassing loss to Furman's Purple Paladins. Tyler Palko was 30 for 36 for an incredible 380 yards. Palko threw three touchdowns and had no interceptions during the game.
Next week Pittsburgh plays away at UConn
Out of conference opponents
Navy held on to defeat Vanderbilt 29-26
In a see-saw, nip and tuck game, the Midshipmen held on to beat the Commodores. Navy had to come back from a 19 -14 third quarter deficit to win. The Middies engineered late drives of 74 and 68 yards to take the lead and pull out the win. Navy's Aaron Polanco threw for a career-high 176 yards. Navy is now 4-0, Vanderbilt is 0-3.
Next week Navy is at Air Force
Next week Vanderbilt plays home against Mississippi State
In other games Louisville disposed of North Carolina 34-0.
