Listed at 6-foot and 180-pounds (4.5-40) Demetrius McCray (Armwood HS, Seffner, FL) was instrumental in helping Armwood win the 2003 state title. He rushed for 1394 yards and scored 20 touchdowns, and this year, it's been more of the same for McCray. Armwood is out to its typically strong start, at 4-0, and with the talented backfield due of McCray and Bailey, expectations this year are to repeat last year's championship performance.
Rutgers was the latest school to join the McCray sweepstakes when they offered a scholarship to the Armwood RB last Friday. Up until that time, McCray had listed Auburn and North Carolina among his leaders, and though he still remains open, the Rutgers offer has changed things, recruiting wise, just a bit.
"I'm originally from New Jersey, from Long Branch, so I'm pretty familiar with the area." In fact, McCray still has family and relatives in the Garden State, which makes Rutgers an immediate attraction to him.
"I'm still pretty much wide open, but there are some schools that I like more than others." McCray indicated that Rutgers is at the top of that list, followed by North Carolina, South Carolina, and Ball State. He has been offered by all those schools, including South Florida, Indiana, Auburn, and Akron.
"Rutgers is a good program and they're really coming on strong now. And, I also have family up there." McCray indicated that having his family and relatives see him play is an important consideration in his recruiting process.
As far as North Carolina, one of his other leaders: "They play a lot of good schools and you get a chance to be noticed."
McCray stated that he intends to take all of his visits before committing to any school. "Yes, I plan on taking all five of my official visits, but not until after the season is over. One of those visits will be to Rutgers."
