Davon Smart Becomes The Latest to Pledge to RU

The weekend of December 18/19 has quickly turned into one of the more impressive in recent months as Davon Smart of Hackensack, New Jersey, has become the second pledge to the Rutgers class of 2005, of the weekend.

Davon Smart (5-foot-11 and 190 pounds) has joined Jabulani Lovelace (Tenafly, NJ) as the second commitment of the 3rd December weekend, 2005.

Smart chose Rutgers over offers from Connecticut, Pittsburgh, and Temple, in addition to interest from Boston College and Iowa.

Although Smart took an official visit to the Rutgers campus earlier in the month, he decided to hold off a commitment announcement.

"My father spoke to me and we came to a conclusion, [today], that since Rutgers was there from the beginning and that I would have a chance to come in and contribute and help out, that it would be the best place for me if I went there."

"I called Coach Schiano earlier today to let him know."

The commitments of Lovelace and Smart, two of the higher rated prospects in New Jersey come at a crucial time when perception around the state indicated that the state University may have been losing ground on virtually all New Jersey prospects it had coveted. However, with Rutgers' pledges this weekend, this perception is quickly losing ground.

Smart took an official visit to Rutgers on the weekend of December 11th.  He was hosted by Jean Beljour and other first year members of the Scarlet Knights.  Smart indicated that while the official visit was nice, he already knew mostly all of what he had to know about Rutgers from previous visits.

Smart indicated that, like Lovelace, he is already focused on a major of study while attending Rutgers University.  "I want to major in Accounting."
