During the Christmas week, the Rutgers Football program received a big gift with the verbal commitment of 6'5"-330lbs OL Dave McClain. After decommiting from Maryland, McClain reopened his recruitment. Subsequently, he selected Rutgers over scholarship offers from Louisville, Purdue, and Temple.
McClain stated that it was a great relief having made a final decision. Some of the reason why he decided to attend Rutgers was the number of young players returning, including Brian Leonard and three other All-Big East players. He also loved the facilities, the coaching staff, and the academic reputation of the school - especially their Education program. He also liked the fact that Rutgers is only 40 minutes away from his home thereby allowing his family and friends to see him play.
In order to get a head start on his Rutgers career, he will enrolled in January and expects to be on campus on January 18th. In order to meet this date, he will need to take his high school final exams early. Once on campus, McClain will immediately begin classes and working out in the Rutgers weight room along with joining the conditioning program.
The Rutgers staff intents on him playing left tackle. McClain does not mind which position along the offensive line that he will play. If left tackle does not appear to be his best position, he will switch to guard. However, he feels that guard is the position that prepares him with the best opportunity to play in the NFL.
Although redshirting is not out of the question, he would like to play immediate. If he is redshirted, he would see it as a challenge to develop his skills.
McClain has a number of goals for his Rutgers career. When he took his official visit, an evaluation of his physical potential was done. His first goal is to exceed all of those numbers . The fact that the strength coach is a former offensive linemen and a mechical engineer, he likes his chances of exceeding those numbers.
Another one of his goals is to assist Rutgers in attaining a Top 10 ranking and a BCS bowl appearance.
He would also like to obtain his degree in Education along with a New Jersey certification.
Finally, number of people have asked why he is attending Rutgers. He simply answers, you will have your answer in four or five years.
