When you think of Armwood High School (FL) perhaps the first name that jumps out at folks is fullback Kalvin Bailey (Iowa commit). However, his backfield teammate Demetrius McCray has been making quite a name for himself and has several offers to show for it. Rutgers joined the McCray sweepstakes during the latter stages of September when the New Jersey school extended a scholarship offer.
Much has happened during the months gone by, including a successful Armwood HS defense of their 4A State Title.
Listed at 6-foot and 180-pounds (4.5-40) Demetrius McCray (Armwood HS, Seffner, FL) was as important a cog in the Hawks arsenal as stud FB Kalvin Bailey.
"It felt great to defend the title. To go out for the past two seasons and win, and to go out on top to win as a senior, it's really special. I'm going to miss High School."
McCray finished his senior season with an impressive 1186 yards on 86 attempts, an astounding 13.79 yards per carry, to go along with 14 TDs. Not to be outdone by his mind-boggling numbers on the ground, McCray also caught 2 TDs in the 4A Title game, from 24 yards and 1 yard out, in the romp over Lakeland.
A complete player with sub-4.4 speed McCray had little problems receiving national attention once folks began to notice the tandem of Bailey and McCray in the Armwood backfield - rather than just Bailey.
Has the narrowing process begun?
"Yeah, I have 3 visits set up. I have South Florida on the 14th, New Mexico on the 21st, and Indiana on the 28th."
What impresses McCray about each of the three schools mentioned?
South Florida - "I really like the coaches here."
New Mexico - "They run the ball a lot and they showed that this year. So I can see how I fit in."
Indiana - "They're in the Big 10 so the competition is really good."
Where does Rutgers stand with McCray? There was speculation that the backfield prospect would be taking a visit to New Jersey during the latter part of January. Does that still look hopeful?
"No, I'm not coming up. Rutgers, they were recruiting me, but I decided I didn't want to go that far."
Although McCray is originally from Long Branch, New Jersey, Scarlet Knight fans should not be holding their breath in hope of seeing the Armwood TB donning Scarlet next year.
McCray is likely to take his gaudy 13.79 ypc to either South Florida, New Mexico, or Indiana. He indicated that he does not have a favorite among his three finalists at this time.
"Being comfortable with the staff is very important to me and the graduation rate of the school is also important. That's how I know the staff is paying attention to me."
When should fans of his Final three expect a decision from McCray?
"I'm probably going to decide after my Indiana visit."
