In the 2004 Rutgers recruiting class, Anthony Miller and Mike Ziarnowski were the first players to commit to the Scarlet Knights. Both players committed on the day of the 2003 Spring Game in April. Kevin Malast might have beat them by two month or more. He committed to the Scarlet Knights days after the 2004 Signing Day.
Malast selected Rutgers over scholarship offers from Virginia, Mississippi, Temple, Western Michigan, and Duke. His first written offers were from Virginia and Syracuse before obtaining an offer from Rutgers, which prove to be the one he was looking for. He decided to commit to Coach Schiano the night of obtaining his official offer. The proximity to home, the ability for his family to see him play, and improvement of the team were the primary reasons why he selected the Scarlet Knights.
During the weekend of December 3rd, Malast visited the Rutgers campus. He was hosted by Brian Leonard and his roommate was Jerome Hayes. Similar to many of the visitors that weekend, Malast had a good time and reaffirmed his commitment to the Scarlet Knights.
The Rutgers staff would like for him to play outside linebacker. They have not instructed him regarding what weight to report to camp as. However, he would like to come in at 220lbs. To ensure that he is fully prepared, he will attend summer school at Rutgers.
Malast is not only a standout football player, he excels on the wrestling mat. Last season, in the 189lbs weight class, he had a record of 30-4 and competed in the State Championship. This year, he is wrestling at 215lbs and is currently undefeated at 9-0. He also plays left field for his high school's baseball team.
