Gary Watts: 11th Hour Commitment for RU

Gary Watts (Miami Norland HS, Miami, FL) had recently given South Florida a verbal commitment just a few short days ago. The fledgling Big East program was about to land one of Florida's top DE prospects. Stage left - enter Rutgers. And that was all Watts needed to change his mind and give the Scarlet Knights his firm pledge at a banquet last night.

Did you commit to Rutgers?

"Yes, I did."

And, you have signed your letter of intent?

"Yes, already did that this morning."

And, in the 11th hour, Rutgers had landed yet another bona fide Top 100 prospect out of the sunshine state. Watts becomes the 22nd commitment for this class, and the 6th prospect from Florida to join Rutgers this year.

"We had a little ceremony at our school yesterday for me and for five other players. That was where we announced where we're going. And then we also announced on the local TV station," stated Watts.

However, today's signing had a little less hoopla than the ceremonies of yesterday.

"It was just a signing. Nothing really to it - we had the banquet yesterday and that was it."

Rutgers seemed to enter the picture quite late in the game, and it appeared as if the Scarlet Knights would remain on the outside looking in, to either North Carolina or South Florida.

"I really like the coaching staff at Rutgers. They called me at the end and I listened. I was very impressed when I visited. The city was nice, it was close to New York. I had a lot of fun, all of the guys had a lot of fun. I just really felt at home with it." ranks Watts as the #58 defensive end prospect in the country. Charles Fishbein and Larry Bluestein, of, two of the most respected Florida analysts, both tab Watts as a Top 100 Florida prospect.

Coach Rod Holder recruited Watts to Rutgers.

"Coach Holder showed that he really cared. We developed a close relationship as a coach and player, and he made me feel that if I ever needed something he'd be there for me."

Watts, can play either the DE or OLB position at the next level but was recruited as a DE. He expects to arrive to Rutgers early during the summer and is eager to get started.

"I'm going to go up there [Rutgers] during the summertime. Depending on how well my workouts go and how well I can learn the defense will determine if I redshirt. I'm going to sit down with the coaches and we're going to see how everything goes and take it from there."
