Last year Joe had a fantastic year playing Tight End and Defensive End. On defense he racked up 54 tackles and 9 sacks. On Offense Joe had 21 receptions for 6 touchdowns and an unreal 27 yards per catch. Joe is 232 pounds, 6'5" and has exceptionally large (11.5") hands. He runs the 40 in 4.8 seconds. After the season, Joe was named to the Associated Press's Second Team All-State and North Jersey 1st Team by the Bergen Record. Academically he is a member of the National Honor Society. This spring he expects to play baseball.
Joe Jr. and his father Joe Sr. recently attended the Rutgers Junior Day. They got to see the facilities and met with Coach Schiano. Joe's father came away very impressed with the training facilities and academic support.
Joe also came away with an offer. "It's new to me," said Joe's father. "It was a dream to me to get a Division 1 scholorship offer" (for my son).
Joe has also received interest from quite a few other schools including Virginia, Maryland, Michigan, Boston College, Miami, Northwestern and Penn State. He and his father are planning on attending the Virginia and Maryland Junior Days. They have not listed any favorites, but have already had unofficial visits to several of these schools. He is looking forward to attending camp at the University of Florida.
Joe is looking for a school that can give him a good start studying Physical Therapy or Radiology.
We will continue to follow the Torchias in future Spotlight '06 segments.
