Rutgers has started the 2006 recruiting season with the commitment of hard hitting safety Zaire Kitchen. In a single game last season against local rival Notre Dame High School, Kitchen knocked two players out of the game including one of his future teammates Tiquan Underwood. Kitchen's abilities did not go unnoticed, he received scholarship offers from Iowa, Indiana, Rutgers, and Towson state.
Although Kitchen had a number of offers along with interest from schools like Pittsburgh and Connecticut, he wanted to end the recruiting process now and focus on playing football along with getting his academics in order. Although the other schools kept in contact with Kitchen, Rutgers continued recruiting him hard. These efforts paid off last week when he committed to the Scarlet Knights. He stated that he likes the facilities, coaches, and the outlook for the future. The fact that Rutgers has been recruiting him for two years and stayed with him played a key role in his decision.
In order to fulfil two necessary
courses for NCAA eligibility, Kitchen will attend prep school at Hardgrave Military
Academy for one semester and will enter Rutgers in January 2006. As a result,
he will immediately compete for the starting safety position vacanted by the
graduation of Jason Nugent. Due to Kitchen's ability to hit and tackle along
with his size (6'1"-200lbs), there is a possibility that he might play
OLB. But he has no preference and which position he plays as long as it is on
Note: Kitchen's teammate Randall Hunt will attend Valley Forge Military Academy.
