The good, the bad, the rough and the net-net

For the Rutgers faithful, this was one of the toughest losses in years. As in many games, the Scarlet Knights did some good, bad, and "rough" things. In this article, I will shortly review the game using these categories and look at the net-net.

For the Rutgers faithful, this was one of the toughest losses in years. As in many games, the Scarlet Knights did some good, bad, and "rough" things. In this article, I will shortly review the game using these categories and look at the takeaways or net-net.

The good...

Ryan Hart threw for over 300 yards and distributed the football to seven different receivers while throwing for three TDs. Hart began the game with 7 consecutive completions. More importantly, Hart did not throw an INT. When pressed or when no receivers were open, he threw the ball away.

For the 15th consecutive game, Brian Leonard had over 100 yards in all-purpose yardage. He finished the game with 128 yards rushing and 64 yards receiving. This yardage included a dazzling 83 yard run where he hurdled a defender before racing 70 yards for the TD.

Ryan Neil has a motor that does not stop. On the first play for the Illinois offense, he registered his first sack of the game. He continuously applied pressure on the QB.

It was great to see Shawn Tucker return to action. He had six catches for 72 yards.

The Bad...

Jeremy Ito was 2 for 6 on field goals including a field goal that would have given Rutgers a 10 point lead.

All American candidates Clark Harris missed 4 critical passes. One of the latter passes would have been a touchdown. It must be said that the linebacker who was playing defense was face guarding but it was a play that an all-American should make. The others were critical plays that would have been first downs.

The Rough...

The Knights gave up 20 unanswered points. Time after time in the second half the Knights has the opportunity to put the game away and were unable to do so. The experienced and talented Rutgers offense should have scored at least two scores.

The net-net...

It is an 11 game season and the team showed some good signs. Hart made some good decisions and did not turn the ball over. This game can be taken as a learning experience and fuel for the fire. Rutgers can still have a good season and attain a bowl berth.
