Aaron Shaw, RB, S, 6-0, 190, 4.56 Monmouth Regional High School
I talked to Aaron last night. Chris Melvin had told me that he was one of Monmouth County's top players and noted that Aaron was another Jerseyan who had had a great showing at the PSU camp.
He did. Aaron turned in a 4.56 in the forty, a 4.5 in the shuttle and demonstrated a 29 inch vertical leap.
Last year Aaron played running back / wing back on offense and defensive back on defense. On "O" he gained 480 yards on 80 carries and added another 225 yards on 22 receptions. But is was on defense where Aaron is at home. Last year he had an impressive 95 tackles and 3 interceptions for MRHS but most of all, he is noted for his field saavy. Aaron greatest strength is his awareness on the field and his ability to hit. "I like defense more than offense and I like to hit", he told me. At 6-0, 190 he has the size and at 4.56 he has the speed to be a consummate safety, which is where he'll project at the next level. Couple that size and speed with his great "on the field" awareness and schools are beginning to take notice.
The schools showing early interest in Aaron are Rutgers, Boston College, UVA, Penn State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Kansas State and several Ivy League schools who are impressed both by his athletic ability but also his high class ranking and national honor society membership.
His early leader, however, is Rutgers. He is being recruited by Joe Susan whom he likes a lot. Aaron also noted that he enjoyed the day up at the spring game last week. That's important, being comfortable with coaches and players will be a big determinant in his decision where to attend college.
Still there is a long way to go. Aaron will attend both the Rutgers camp and the Boston College camp and a lot can happen between now and signing day.
Who can tell this early?
However, I do think that there is one thing you can tell this early in the year. I guess Monmouth Regional will be loaded come this fall.
