Rutgers in Preseason NIT

The second year of the Gary Waters era will begin on Nov. 18 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center when the Scarlet Knights play host to Columbia in the first round of the 2002 Preseason NIT. The Rutgers-Columbia winner will play on Nov. 20 against the winner of the Penn State-North Carolina game in a matchup that will be televised nationally on ESPN. "I think starting off the season in tournament play will be good for our team," Waters said. "And, hopefully, we can make some noise in the tournament." The tournament takes place at regional sites throughout the country and comes to Madison Square Garden for the semifinals and championship doubleheaders Nov. 27 and 29. The other first-round matchups in the 2002 Preseason NIT include: Boston University at Stanford; St. Peter's at Xavier; Eastern Illinois at Boise State; Louisiana Tech at Florida; Penn State at North Carolina; Wagner at UNC-Greensboro; Holy Cross at Kansas. This marks the second time Rutgers has been a part of the Preseason NIT. In 1992, Rutgers lost, 87-79, to the University of Tennessee at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The Rutgers men's basketball schedule will be announced in the summer. Arkansas:
