Scouting Buffalo

The University at Buffalo 2002 football recruiting class is ranked at the top of the Mid-American Conference in The Sporting News annual college football guide.

The selections, done by recruiting gurus Rivals.com, have Buffalo's 2002 recruiting class head coach Jim Hofher and staff's second at UB fourth among the 14 football playing schools in the MAC. MAC newcomer Central Florida which Buffalo hosts on Nov. 9 at UB Stadium was ranked first, followed by MAC East Division defending champion Marshall and defending MAC champion Toledo. The Bulls were fourth followed by Western Michigan, Akron, Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH), Central Michigan and Northern Illinois rounding out the top ten.

Quarterback
1. Miami – In 2001, Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey was first-team All-Big East, second-team Associated Press All-America, won the Maxwell Award and finished third for the Heisman Trophy. In his first three years, Dorsey has completed a hair under 60 percent of his passes for over 6,000 yards and 58 touchdowns, and he is 26-1 as a starter. Incoming freshman Marc Guillon went to the same high school (Orinda HS, in Miramonte, Calif.) as Dorsey.

National Football - Towards a playoff?

In a move certain to revive speculation about a playoff, the conference commissioners who run college football's Bowl Championship Series are calling for a broad review of the sport's unique postseason format.

The six commissioners, headed by the Big East's Mike Tranghese, have asked university presidents to join the study — weighing options from a BCS extension and preservation of the decades-old bowl system to a playoff. The BCS' array of contracts, including its seven-year, $525-million agreement with ABC Television, expires after the 2005 season.

More on Title IX

What other sport attracts enough people to a stadium to make a college campus one of the top-10 populations in states such as Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio or Tennessee? What other sport inspires fans to bare torsos painted in school colors despite frigid temperatures?

College football also inspires loyalty when it comes to gender equity. As a result, the sport's players, coaches and fans often wear the black hat, or in this case black helmet, when it comes to issues of gender equity in sports.

Fan Feedback

On Dave Paich's recruiting analysis:

Excellent job!

On the new site:

Hi Mike,
I like the new site although I took a little time getting used to the
format. You guys certainly put a wealth of info out there and I check
the site just about every day. Recently I have noticed that there have
been vertical scrolling advertisements on the right side of the screen
and while I acknowledge the necessity of advertising dollars, these are
most distracting. Very distracting. They suck. If they were on the
top, at least I could just scroll down a bit and get them off the screen.

Other than that, two thumbs up!
