1-on-1 with Hopatcong Star

Joe Martinek, despite his stellar highlight film, has had to prove himself all over again during Combine season. In this interview Martinek talks about his Combine experiences, performances, and more.

Talk about your experiences at Elite
It went well. We had several coaches notice me at the Elite combine. I ran a better 40 yard dash than I had at Scout. I did not do as well at the Scout combine because it was my first one and did not know what to expect. I felt pretty tight and nervous for that one. But at Elite I felt pretty loose and it showed up in how I did. Both my times were under 4.5. And I also did a lot better in the 1-on-1 drills. They had me matched up against the linebackers, and I performed very strongly.

How has recruiting gone for you since the May 1st evaluation period began?
We had several schools come in this past week. Northwestern, Penn St, Rutgers, Pitt, BC, and a few other schools had coaches come in. There seems to be interest coming from those schools.

How is your recruitment from Rutgers coming along?
It is going well. Coach Ver Steeg was in this week. I got to speak to him for several minutes. Coach Schiano is scheduled to come in on May 22nd. He and I have had many conversations over time and we have a solid relationship.

Are you attending any more combines this summer?
No I am not. I will not go to Nike [this interview was conducted before the Nike Camp this past weekend]. The strain from practicing for track and combines has taken a toll on my body. Right now, I just want to focus on doing as best I can in track.

Do you hope to make an early decision?
We will start to narrow things down in the next month or two. Perhaps then we will make a decision so I can stay focused on my senior year.
