How did it all start for the Maryland star?
"Well, I think it might have been in February or March when they [Rutgers] offered me and it was my first scholarship offer. From then I started talking to Coach [Cary] Godette and we started to build a very good relationship," stated Lefeged.
Despite the dismal weather that dawned upon the RU Spring game, Lefeged was on hand on an unofficial visit to soak everything in and had another opportunity to see the campus and meet with the coaching staff.
"I met with Coach Demo that day and I met with Coach Schiano. When I was done talking to him [Coach Schiano] RU was already becoming my favorite. The academics were important to me because they have a good Business School there and I want to major in business. And now with the athletics taking the next step I was getting very interested."
How interested, exactly?
"It [talking to Coach Schiano that day] sealed the deal for me. He was being real to me. He was just talking to me about where he came from, why he's here and what he wants to do here. He told me I was the top Safety on his board. The coaches showed me how important I am to them and that they care."
Despite his great experience, Lefeged needed time to ensure that the feeling would not be fleeting. Another unofficial trip to Rutgers this past Friday ensured that Lefeged's interest in Rutgers was legitimate and that a decision may be in the offing ... soon.
"Friday I went on an unofficial visit with my mom." Lefeged stated that he had another chance to see the facilities, get a better idea of the academic opportunities available at Rutgers, and meet with the staff once again. "Coach Demo showed me some film and told me what he expects from his players and what he wants me to do at the Safety position."
"I wanted to commit right then and there," stated Lefeged. His adrenaline through the roof, Lefeged decided to hold off and began his trip back to Maryland Friday afternoon. During the drive back a mother and son discussion ensued, and Joseph and Mrs. Lefeged had reached their decision.
Rutgers would be the choice.
"I called and talked to Coach Codette and told him I wanted to commit. He said he was very happy. I talked to Coach Schiano and then I wanted to call Coach Demo also. He said he was so happy that he was going to head out and go lift some weights," continued Lefeged.
The relations Lefeged has built with the RU staff were easily evident in Joseph's voice and the manner in which he spoke about each coach, having nothing but the most positive of things to say about all.
As a Junior, Lefeged also played QB en route to scoring a total of 17TDs (throwing and running) and estimates roughly 700 yards rushing and 700 yards throwing. Defensively, Lefeged accounted for 70 tackles, recorded 5 sacks, had 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and 1 TD.
