Newell decides to commit to Rutgers

Rutgers continues to assemble a solid recruiting class with the commitment of 4-star prospect Keith Newell. At 6'5"-300lbs with a 5.0 forty, Newell has the ability to play either offensive or defensive line. As a result, the Scarlet Knights have landed another top linemen to answer a need area for this team on the rise.

Rutgers has landed one of the top lineman in the Northeast in 4-star prospect Keith Newell. He decided to commit to the Scarlet Knights thereby resulting in another major commitment for the State University of New Jersey.

In discussing his commitment with his head coach, Coach Mack, he sounded very enthused about the decision his star player had made. “We have been speaking and that is the direction he was heading in. He was being recruited by everyone in the country, but Keith felt most comfortable with Coach Schiano and what he has been doing with that program. He is going after the top kids in the Metro area. The facilities are great. The academics are great. They have everything that a major college football program can offer right here in NJ. Plus the fact that he gets to be close to home where we can all follow his career is just excellent for everyone involved with the kid. If I can sum it up, he is an excellent kid and this is a wonderful fit.”

According to Coach Mack, Newell understands what the Rutgers program is capable of. “Keith just felt that it is a program on the way up. He has bought in to everything Coach Schiano has to say and the vision for that program. If Rutgers continues to land this level of kids, they will be a major force to be reckoned with”.

Mack thinks that his star player is a rare blend of throwback and has a nasty streak. “Keith is a kid that plays with fire. A lot of kids his size don’t have that level of aggressiveness. He has great feet and is long. I think he is a kid that could play right away, but I think he could benefit from a redshirt year to grow as a student and a football player. But Keith is a kid I believe could play anywhere in the country. Rutgers is getting an impact kid”.

In terms of his future position at Rutgers, that is yet to be determined. “I think he would be better off playing Offensive Tackle, but I do know he likes to hit people and play on the defensive side of the ball. When he gets there, those things will resolve themselves”.

Where ever he plays, Keith Newell will surely be a player to focus on over the next several years as Rutgers lands another gem.
