Ramel Meekins: Outland Trophy Watch List

Senior defensive tackle Ramel Meekins (initially a Rutgers Football walk-on) of the Rutgers University football team has been named to the Football Writers Association of America pre-season Outland Trophy Watch List for the 2006 season.

The Outland Trophy has been awarded to the best offensive or defensive lineman in college football since 1946. The winner is selected by the FWAA's All-America Committee, which selects the association's 25-man team and also picks three Outland Trophy finalists.

Meekins, a 6-0, 275-pound defensive tackle from Westwood, NJ, earned a starting assignment at defensive tackle in the 2005 training camp and turned in an outstanding season. He finished fifth on the team in tackles (63), second in tackles for loss (15.0) and third in sacks (9.0). Meekins also ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in both sacks and TFLs. He tied for 30th nationally in sacks per game (0.75) and tied for 42nd in TFLs per game (1.25).

Meekins, who has also been named to The Sporting News 2006 Pre-Season All-BIG EAST Second Team, had a career-high 10 tackles and a Rutgers season-high four sacks for a loss of 38 yards in RU's regular-season finale against Cincinnati (11/26), leading a defensive unit that posted nine sacks against the Bearcats. He also had two QB hurries vs. Cincinnati and was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for his performance. Meekins also recovered two fumbles for Rutgers in the 2005 Insight Bowl vs. Arizona State.

The 2006 Outland Trophy announcement will be on Dec. 7 in Orlando, Fla., on the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee and First Data Corporation, is set for Jan. 11, 2007, in Omaha, Neb.
