Pope John (Sparta, NJ) Wins Shootout

Nearly 80 teams showed up for the annual Greg Schiano Shootout held on the Campus of Rutgers University. Nearly every squad boasting at least a D-1AA prospect, with some teams having some terrific young talent, the competition was fierce from the opening minute. In the end, however, a New Jersey school, Pope John (Sparta, NJ) bested all.

The weather was able to hold up for the majority of the morning sessions. An absolute boon, allowing group play to continue without a hitch, the number of teams were abundant and spread over both the Busch and Livingston campuses on the grounds of Rutgers University. Play was eventually haulted by early afternoon, but at that point, the Final 8 had been established. The Elite 8 would compete inside the Rutgers Bubble, away from the rumbles of thunder that began to increase in frequency.

The Elite 8 reps were:

Absegami HS (Galloway, NJ)
Bergen Catholic HS (Oradell, NJ)
East Orange HS (East Orange, NJ)
Father Judge (Philadelphia, PA)
Franklin HS (Somerset, NJ)
Glen Rock HS (Glen Rock, NJ)
Loyalsock Township HS (Williamsport, PA)
Pope John XXIII HS (Sparta, NJ).

The final pitted Pope John and their electric speed demon Jeremy Tucker versus Father Judge. Showing an abundance of moves, Tucker put his squad on his back and led them to victory. Despite being double and even triple teamed at times, Pope John continued to go to their tailback star who continued to make play after play. Unlike last year's Shootout Champion, this year's version would be a Garden State School: Pope John would bring home the trophy.
