Netwhispers on Hoops




The USA junior team that will compete in COPABA World Championship has been selected. Fifteen finalists competed for the 12 spots.  The final team includes Mohamed Abukar, California; Carmelo Anthony, Baltimore, Maryland; Chris Bosh, Lancaster, Texas; Aaron Brooks, Seattle, Washington; Daniel Brown, Maywood, Illinois; Dan Horton, Cedar Hill, Texas; Kris Humphries, Chaska, Minn.; Andre Iguodala, Springfield, Illinois; Brian Johnson, Glenarden, Maryland; Deron Williams, Colony, Texas; Dave Padgett, Reno, Nevada; and Antoine Wright, San Bernadino, California.


Finalists Mustafa Shakur and Brad Buckman selected not to be a part of the team and withdrew prior to camp.  Derrick Byars of Memphis, Tenn., Matt Gorman of Watertown, New York and Dion Harris of Detroit, Michigan did not make the final cut.


The team has two a day practice from July 15 to July 21 at the American Airline Center in Miami, Florida.  The team will fly to Venezuela on Monday, July 22 and play its first game against the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, July 24. On July 25, the team will compete against Mexico and then against Argentina on the July 26.  The semi-finals will take place on July 27, 2002, with the final the next day.


Ernie Kent, Bob McKillop and Gary Waters coach the USA team. It will play an up style game on offense and defense. Expect them to attack and defend from baseline to baseline. Their objective is to turn over the opposition and create transition opportunities for themselves.
