Rutgers fans are very familiar with the name Stapleton, since it happens to be the last name of the Rutgers starting center and Rimington Trophy candidate Darnell Stapleton. Now Rutgers fans will have the opportunity to become even more familiar with the name as Darnell's younger brother Desmond has given his oral commitment to attend the state university of New Jersey - Rutgers. Desmond Stapleton selected Rutgers over offers from Marshall, Virginia, and Temple.
He stated that he woke up early on the morning of Monday, July 17th, and gave his verbal commitment to Rutgers. His decision came down to the "comfort and trust" that he developed with the football coaching staff.
Although his brother is the current starting center, he stated that his brother had no influence on his decision. Desmond also added that the proximity to home along with the fact the "Rutgers program is on a huge rise and by the time I get there we will win a national championship" as the overriding reasons for his selection of Rutgers.
As stated previously, the bond that he developed with the coaching staff was a big reason for selecting Rutgers. In particular, he Stapleton pointed out the relationships he has developed with Coach Schiano, Kyle Flood, and Jason Mitchell as having a big impact on his recruitment and eventual final decision. Another big advantage for Rutgers was having his recruiting coach being his future position coach.
Desmond stated that he likes Coach Flood's technique and philosophy behind coaching the offensive line. Since his brother can give him some in-depth insight, it is a real testimony to the relationship and coaching ability of Coach Flood. Now Coach Flood has another big body to add to his ever improving unit.
