Martinek Selects Rutgers

Joe Martinek, a 6-foot-0 and 195 pound athlete, from Hopatcong, N.J. burst on to the scene before his Junior year although he earned Associated Press first team All-State honors and was named Western New Jersey Player of the Year after the conclusion of '05. RU offered the rising Junior on 9/1, and Martinek did not disappoint as he ran for an impressive 2,509 yards and 28 touchdowns last year.

"I committed last night," stated Joe Martinek of Hopatcong HS. The 6-foot and 195-pound RB/DB decided to select Rutgers over offers from Vanderbilt and FIU, and interest from a number of schools including West Virginia.

Martinek was on hand for a couple of Rutgers practices during summer training camp and took the opportunity to study his potential (at the time) future team. In the end, the Garden State standout simply wanted to reassure himself of his feelings for his state school.

"I wanted to wait until I was 100% comfortable and Rutgers has everything I want. They have a great coaching staff, they have great players already and they are pulling in a very good recruiting class," stated Martinek (pictured to the right at a recent Rutgers practice).

"It is close to home, my friends and family can go to the games and I believe if all the top players in New Jersey went to Rutgers it would easily be a national championship conteder every year."

In the end, the comfort level with the current direction of the program in addition to his relationship to Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano proved to seal the deal for Martinek.

"I had a couple questions for Coach Schiano and could not have felt more confortable with him as being my next head coach. He has a goal and will stop at nothing to achieve it."

What sort of things did Martinek and his future coach discuss?

"We talked about how to get to the next level after college, we talked about playing time [at Rutgers]. He cannot [guarantee time] but I am not worried about that, because I know if I work hard and earn a spot then I will play. And that is all I wanted, was the opportunity to play the game."

As a junior, Martinek rushed for 2,509 yards and 28 touchdowns and racked up 43 solo tackles, seven sacks, and blocked three punts netting him All-State, West Jersey Player of Year, All Academic League, Heisman Tri State Player of Week, National Football Foundation/Madison Square Garden All-Metro High School Football Team honors.

In addition to his Junior season honors, Joe attended All-American Combine held in Piscataway this past spring. Martinek showed impressive speed and solid change of direction ability, clocking in at a 4.50-40 and notching a 4.37-shuttle.
