Leonard Named to Doak Walker Award List

Rutgers Heisman Trophy candidate and All-American fullback Brian Leonard (Governeur, NY) was one of 50 players named to the 2006 Doak Walker Award candidate list, as announced by The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum Thursday.

The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.

Leonard was named to the Doak Walker Award list for the second consecutive season. The New York native is the NCAA's active leader in all-purpose touchdowns (40) and rushing attempts (585). He also ranks fourth among all active players nationally in receptions (169), sixth in rushing touchdowns (27) and eighth in rushing yards (2,352).

One of the most versatile running backs in the nation, Leonard has caught at least one pass in 34 consecutive games, the third-best streak in BIG EAST history.

Leonard and his Scarlet Knight teammates open the season Saturday at North Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:36 p.m. and the game will be televised to a regional audience on ABC.
