Before the 2006 season, Rutgers had received a number of early commitments . At 6'6"-300lbs, Keith Newell is among the physically biggest commitments of the 2007 recruiting class. For a man of his size, Newell has very good body control, speed, and quickness. As a junior, Newell registered 7 sacks, 3 fumbles caused, 8 recovered, and 18 solo tackles. His athleticism has been also evident on the basketball court, where he averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds as a junior.
Due to his athleticism, Newell will likely start out on the DL. However, his size and athleticism could make him a standout LT.
Since committing to Rutgers, Newell has spent most of his time preparing for the 2006 season and has been happy to have his college decision behind him. It ended the numerous calls from college recruiters such as Illinois, Temple, Cincinnati, and Syracuse. He is now focusing on his season which opens up Saturday, September 9th.
As a part of his regular season schedule, Newell's team will play Nottingham H.S where another Rutgers commitment plays - Wayne Thomas. Newell and Thomas are friends. However, the two have limited their contact until after the two teams meet. When asked if the two have hungout this summer, Newell stated "Nah, not really. We chat and we call each other every now and then. We are still rivals and we both have teams to lead this year. So after we play each other we'll hang out".
Although Newell has yet to schedule his official visit to Rutgers. He does
plan on attending the Rutgers-Louisville game.
