Lefeged: "I saw something in Rutgers"

Joseph Lefeged was an early commitment to the Rutgers Football class of 2007 and selected the Scarlet Knights over several other offers. Lefeged was one of many RU commitments that was on hand this past week for the UConn/RU contest and eagerly awaits RU's next matchup versus Louisville.

"Right now, I'm really excited about the team. I've been talking to the coaches and keeping up with everything. I was at the Connecticut game. I came with my mom and with my cousin. We got there at around 4 or 5. The atmosphere was great, people were already there tailgating and having a good time," stated the Northwest High School (Germantown, MD) product.

Lefeged, a 4-star prospect according to Scout.com, had an opportunity to meet with and talk to his future position coach Chris Demarest before the Scarlet Knights took the field.

"I was talking to my Coach, Coach Demo. Then we all went on the field for warm-ups and that was really exciting," continued Lefeged.

Though RU jumped out of the gates quickly, the Huskies mounted a comeback and the game was still in doubt late. However, Lefeged was left impressed by the defense and Special Teams, due to their ability to make a play when they had to. He added, when discussing the overall defense as a unit, "They are very quick to the ball and they have good awareness."

Lefeged was offered early by a number of programs, including a number of ACC schools. At the time, it was not yet the chic thing to do - to select RU over other apparent top programs.

"Before the season started everybody wanted to know why [I chose] Rutgers. Everybody wanted me to go to an ACC school because that's where most guys around here go to. I saw something in Rutgers though. Right now, everybody is telling me that I made a great choice," said the 6-foot-1 and 192-pound Lefeged.

Despite the commitment of a particular prospect, schools often times must continue recruiting said player if they wish to retain him for the following 4 or 5 years. The case with Lefeged is a bit different, perhaps old school some may say. SOR asked Lefeged what schools had continued to recruit him, to which Lefeged replied, "There are some schools but I don't know which ones. The way our school is, if you commit to one school, the Head Coach doesn't allow other schools to continue to recruit you."

In other words, a commitment is just that, in every sense of the word.

This Thursday night will mark an important showcase opportunity for the Big East and Rutgers as well. What are Lefeged's overall impressions of the team so far and his thoughts on the upcoming Big East clash of unbeatens?

"For the Navy game, people thought that Navy would really give them trouble, but after that game people really started saying how Rutgers is the truth. And Thursday, that's going to be a big, big game."

Lefeged's squad is currently 9-0 on the season and has another regular season game this upcoming Saturday before the playoffs are set to begin. Due to his game on Saturday and schedule for the remainder of the week, he remains unsure whether he will attend the RU/Louisville game on Thursday night.
