This, That and the Other

THIS, THAT AND THE OTHER

UCONN HONES IN

The University of Connecticut has not received a verbal commitment as of now for the Class of 2007 entering September 2003.  The staff has indicated that three scholarships will be given out during the early period.  Two will go to insiders and one to a point guard.

Presently there are six inside position players on the Uconn team. Mike Hayes and Justin Brown are seniors, Scott Hazelton is a junior, Emeka Okafor is a sophomore and Hilton Armstrong and Marcus White are freshmen. The staff has indicated that they want to sign the inside power players this fall.

Several New England players are being courted but the number one recruit for the center position is presently Courtney Sims, a 6'11" power insider from Dedham, Massachusetts.  Courtney averaged 19.2 points, 10 rebounds and 8 blocks as a junior.  He exploded onto the high major recruiting scene several weeks ago.  He is being pursued by the University of Connecticut, Memphis, Michigan, Providence and Syracuse.

He was on campus August 9 and was impressed with the coaches, campus and facilities. He wants to stay close to home but will allow specific out of the area schools to recruit him. He is said to be fully qualified.

Coach Calhoun and his staff are also heavily involved with top 50 insider Terrence Roberts of St. Anthony's of Jersey City, New Jersey. The Huskies are one of the five finalists and list Roberts near the top of their inside list. Roberts is a dominant rebounder who is a true bull on the boards. He is being recruited as a power forward.

Connecticut is very close to receiving a verbal from a star point guard.  The verbal may come as early as next week. The guard is none other than Marcus Williams, a fifth year senior originally out of Los Angeles, Crenshaw High School who will spend the year at Oak Hill Academy.  Williams will be in Storrs during the week of August 19th.  He has yet to take the standardized test for college academic eligibility.
