No player on the Rutgers University football team has re-invented himself more completely or more effectively than Chris Baker. He redshirted for academic reasons last season and became the tall, skinny left-handed quarterback from Marist High School who ran the scout team.
But by the time the spring season rolled around, the metamorphosis had begun. A winter's worth of pumping iron had pushed him closer to his current 206 pounds than his original 185. And instead of slinging passes in the pocket, he decided he wanted to catch them instead, switching to wide receiver.

Injuries mar Vols' scrimmage: The most pleasing part of Saturday's scrimmage for Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer was that he saw the kind of improvement he was hoping for.
The most frustrating part was that the Vols lost a couple of players to injuries.
The most serious was to junior offensive guard Chavis Smith, who suffered injuries to his right knee and ankle in a pileup. The initial diagnosis was that Smith damaged his medial collateral ligament and is out indefinitely.
