Speed kills and no one knows that better than the Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano, who has been accumulating enough speed on the Rutgers roster to have a fierce 4x400 relay team. On Monday, Coach Schiano added Mason Robinson to his list of verbal commitments. As for speed, Robinson possesses a lot of it. He has been timed at 10.5 in the 100M and 21.7 in the 200M. In the 2006 New Jersey Meet of Champions, he placed third in the 100M.
For Rutgers, Robinson will utilize his speed at the RB position. As a senior, he ran for more than 1600 yards and 16 TDs. These numbers attracted offers from Michigan State, Boston College, Iowa, and Minnesota.
Knowing the abilities that Robinson possesses, Coach Schiano was very happy when Robinson informed him of his commitment. Although Rutgers had a lot of on-field success, Robinson's decision was primarily based on the program's focus on academics. Although he is still deciding on his major, he carried a better than 3.0 GPA and greater than 1200 on his SAT. Beyond the academics, Robinson loves the atmosphere at the New Brunswick campus, relationships that he has built with the players, and the state of the art football facilities.
As far as football, Robinson would like to make an early contribution as a true freshman. He does admit that he would not be upset if he is redshirted. But, he has plans of running behind the big and physical Rutgers offensive line as a freshman. He believes the Rutgers offensive line will provide him with opportunities to get to the second level and out run the DBs to the endzone.
In order to get prepared for Big East football, he will start working out at Rutgers after he signs his letter of intent.
Like many of the Rutgers commitments, he will be contacting other recruits to inform them of the attributes of Rutgers. Among the players that he will be talking to will be standout RB/DB from Immaculata, Theo Riddick, who is Robinson's cousin. Robinson will not put any pressure on Riddick but provide him with all of the attributes of the Scarlet Knight program.
Robinson has been selected to play in the 2007 Governor's Bowl.
