Rutgers has finished their best season since 1976, where they posted a 11-0 record. As the Scarlet Knights look towards 2007, there are a few positions that Rutgers will need help. Among the players that the staff might look for immediate assistance from could be Keith Newell. At 6'6"-280lbs with a 5.0 forty, Newell brings excellent size to the DT position. This is a position where the Scarlet Knights have been undersized for a number of years. On December 28th, Newell had an opportunity to watch the Texas Bowl featuring Rutgers against Kansas State.
The top 10 Rutgers' defense held Kansas State to less than 200 yards of offense. Newell stated that they were "fast as always...they really got off the ball well". The thought of having an opportunity to play in a bowl game next year gave Newell "chills thinking about it". His goal is to get into the defensive line rotation and possibly start.
In order to improve his chances of playing next year, Newell decided not to play basketball this year but hit the weights hard while focusing more on his academics. He has started a rigorous workout routine which includes speedwork and weightlifting. However, he is not allowing his workouts to interfere with his academic progress.
Newell has been keeping in touch with fellow recruits such as Anthony Davis and Wayne Thomas. Like many others, he is looking forward to Anthony Davis' announcement during the Army All-American game on January 6th.
