Because of his thickness and versatility, he is also being recruited to play the LB and S positions.

On the season, Grant received honors from the Newark Star Ledger as an All-Purpose player. On defense, he registered 40 tackles, 5 interceptions and a fumble recovery. He also spent some time as a WR. Grant considers himself the emotional leader of the team, and states he has good cover and tackling skills.

While Mayes is waiting for his first offer, he thinks one may be coming very soon. “I spoke to the coaches at Rutgers and they said they may offer this week. I have been there 3 times”.

The last time Grant was at RU was for the recent Jr. Day. “The Jr. Day at Rutgers was sick. Coach Schiano did a great job teaching. What was most impressive was he spent the 1st 2 hours not talking about football. He spoke of stressing school, academics, being responsible. I think that is what attracted most of the recruits there that day. Plus they are top 20 now”.

Besides Rutgers, Mayes is receiving attention from many other programs. He has been texting with coaches at UConn, and Boston College. He is also getting correspondence from schools such as Michigan, Michigan St, Florida, Maryland, Pitt, Texas A&M.

The letter from Michigan personally impressed him. “I got a hand written letter from Lloyd Carr saying that he wants me to come out and visit. I am trying to get out to Michigan for an unofficial”. Other places he will visit are West Virginia and Boston College.

This spring, Grant will run track and lift weights. He will participate in the Elite, Nike, and Scout.com combines.
