For Newell, he has been busy preparing for his career at Rutgers by spending a lot of time in the weightroom and on the track. His hard work has started to pay dividends with his bench press now close to 350lbs and his squat to 450lbs. For a high school senior with arms as long as Newell's, this is a solid bench press especially if you take into account that he has only recently started a consistent weightlifting routine. As a part of his workout, he looks to greatly increase his quickness. In order to accomplish this goal, he has lost 5lbs and now weighs 270lbs. His target is 260lbs. The weight loss and weightlifting has helped him to drop his forty time from 5.01 to 4.85. Although his weight appears to be a little light for a Division 1A DT, he plans on rebuilding his body and add the necessary weight to his 6'6" frame once he is on campus and fully apart of the Rutgers strength training program.
In the classroom, Newell stated that he has obtained the necessary SAT scores
and is doing well in the classroom. If his progress continues, Newell stated
that he should be fully qualified.
