Malcolm Johnson Commits to Rutgers

In the 2007 recruiting class, Rutgers added a large percentage of linemen. The 2008 class seems to be the year of skilled players. On Wednesday, Rutgers added more skilled players to the recruiting class. One of the two added was Malcolm Johnson, who is a standout WR/DB from Bartow, FL.

Johnson selected Rutgers over offers from Virginia Tech, Arkansas, Kansas, Arizona State, Kansas and Central Florida. As Johnson states "I really liked my official visit. It was different from here (Bartow, Fl). Every day there is something different to do. The (Rutgers) coaches made sure that I was on top of my grades while the other schools did not...I liked the players. They are cool and laid back. I feel that I will fit in with them".

His size, 4.4 speed, 36" vertical and closing speed to the ball makes him a candidate for a number of positions. This might have been the reason why he stated that Rutgers recruited him as an athlete. As he states, "they (Rutgers) do not know which position I will play yet. I do not have a preference and I will play where ever they need me. The position really does not matter". For Johnson, he feels that the option of playing either offense or defense allows him to compete for a position that will get him on the field early. His goal is to play as a true freshman. As a DB, he views himself as a shutdown CB. At WR, he sees himself as a big play threat.

Immediately, Johnson will prepare to play WR and prepare playing the position with D.C. Jefferson. The two future Scarlet Knights only live 15 minutes away from each other. As he stated, "I will have an advantage over the others (WRs) because I live about 15 minutes away from D.C. . We will be practicing all of the time. We will be hooking up a lot during the summer". If Johnson does play WR, Rutgers fans must be hoping these two Floridians will be hooking up a lot over the next four years.
