Rutgers (25-6) was led by Kia Vaughn's 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 1 blocked shot. The Scarlet Knights started off fast and furious, jumping out to a 15-2 lead and were never threatened by the Colonials, who had their 17-game winning streak, fourth in the nation, snapped. Sade Logan, the nation's second leading scorer was held to just 2 points in the first half, and Rutgers was able to open up a 48-21 lead.
As usual, it was the Scarlet Knights defense that made the biggest headlines. The Colonials had a historic shooting day, draining 12 of 60 attempts from the field. The 20% clip was the fourth lowest in the history of the women's NCAA tournament. Meanwhile, Rutgers shot 54.8 percent from the field (34-62), held a largest lead of 43 points, and had four players reach double figures.
Not to be outdone by their defense, the Rutgers offense was in rare form, notching a season high in points (85), by far surpassing the previous season high of 73 set against #1 Connecticut in a 73-71 win against the Huskies. Rutgers was able to score 25 points more than their season average, a mark that was nearly reached by just halftime (RU averaged 60 points per game coming into this contest). On the flipside, Robert Morris was held 32 points below their season average of 74 ppg.
The Scarlet Knights improve to 30-18 in the NCAA Tournament, 12-4 in first round games, 6-0 in opening round contests on a neutral floor, now hold a 22-9 record under C. Vivian Stringer in the NCAAs, and will move on to the second round of the Greensboro Regional where they will face Iowa State. The Cyclones defeated Georgia Tech, 58-55, earlier in the day.
Rutgers is 15-11 against current members of the Big 12 Conference, but haven't played a Big 12 foe since 2005. The Scarlet Knights defeated Texas on December 30, in 2005, 63-49, in their last contest versus the Big 12.
The Scarlet Knights have faced off against Iowa State only once, and defeated ISU in Iowa, in a second round game of the NCAA Tournament. Rutgers, then seeded #5, were sent to Iowa as part of the Mideast Region, in 1998. In the first round, the Scarlet Knights defeated Oregon State 79-76, before defeating fourth-seeded and host Iowa State, 62-61.
