 Men's Basketball

Wooten wasted his time giving Rutgers University men's basketball coach Gary Waters and assistant Garland Mance detailed directions to his house. Waters and Mance, making an in-home recruiting visit last spring, could have navigated the route with their eyes closed. Detroit natives, both grew up within five miles of Wooten's home.

If basketball was the only thing Ricky Shields had to think about since last season ended, then the horrible shooting slump that spoiled the final six games of his freshman year might still be weighing on his mind. But Shields knows better now.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Winning easy is back at Miami, and just in time for the Miami Hurricanes to reclaim the No. 1 ranking.

Next week's opponent Temple lost to Pittsburgh 29-22

This was the first time that I saw the Owls this year. This is a good Temple football team. The Owls used flanker screens and slants to spread the field thus setting up hand offs to Tanardo Sharps and quarterback draws to QB Mike McGann.

Temple outplayed the Panthers but lost the game on fumbles.

The Owls execute their offense well and have good athletes on defense. Traditionally, Rutgers has not matched up well with Bobby Wallace coached Temple teams and this version of the the Owls will be a very tough test for the Knights.

PITTSBURGH (AP) With a victory at nationally ranked Virginia Tech just behind them and Miami ahead, this was a perfect time for a letdown by the Pitt Panthers. A letdown, perhaps, but not a loss. Claude Harriott scored the deciding touchdown on an 11-yard fumble return early in the fourth quarter and No. 22 Pittsburgh set up two other touchdowns with big defensive plays to hold off stubborn Temple 29-22 Saturday. Rod Rutherford threw for two touchdowns and ran for another even as Pitt mounted only one sustained drive against a Temple defense that held the Panthers to minus yards rushing until late in the third quarter.

Big East Scoreboard

Syracuse upset Virginia Tech in triple overtime 50-42

It took Syracuse University's secondary four quarters and three overtimes to figure out how to play the right coverage on Virginia Tech's 6-foot-4 receiver Ernest Wilford. On the game's final play, the Orangemen figured it out. Senior safety Maurice McClain intercepted quarterback Bryan Randall's fade pass in the third overtime to give Syracuse a 50-42 victory over No. 8-ranked Virginia Tech on Saturday in a Big East Conference game before 48,239 at the Carrier Dome.

West Virginia beat Boston College 24-14

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) Avon Cobourne rushed for 138 yards and James Davis blocked two field goal attempts Saturday to lead West Virginia to a 24-14 victory over Boston College. After forcing five turnovers in toppling previously unbeaten Notre Dame last week, Boston College (5-4, 0-4 Big East) looked uninspired against the Mountaineers and remained winless in the Big East.

Notre Dame twice came from behind to outlast Navy 30-23

BALTIMORE (AP) _ Notre Dame was sleepwalking through another poor outing when Carlyle Holiday stirred up things with a rousing fourth-quarter performance. Trailing by eight points against lightly regarded Navy late in Saturday's game, the ninth-ranked Fighting Irish rallied behind their sophomore quarterback, averting a second straight shocking upset.

Texas A&M, in a huge upset, beat Oklahoma 30-26

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Oklahoma couldn't escape Texas A&M this time, and it could cost the Sooners a shot at the national title.
Saturday's 30-26 loss certainly will drop the Sooners (8-1, 4-1 Big 12) from the No. 1 position in both the Associated Press poll and the Bowl Championship Series standings.

Fan Feedback - Rutgers - Miami retrospective

I was in DC-there is no way I was going to travel to beautiful Piscataway to
watch my alma mater to be trounced by a semi-pro team, so I decided to watch
the game at the ESPN Zone. Unfortunately, the game was not broadcast by
ESPN so I had to settle with highlights. Mike, people were cheering on
every highlight. Since ESPN had three games being played simultaneously
highlights came every three to five minutes. Everyone at the zone, jump to
their feet, needless to say that Miami has a lot of foes on the national
capital, every time RU/CANE score showed up. When the flagged return TD was
overturned, as highlighted by ESPN, people cursed and yelled-a beautiful
site. I know they were not cheering for RU, but boy I felt for the first
time what would be when strangers adopt your school as their choice for a
pleasant Sat. afternoon.
