Rutgers men's basketball coach Gary Waters may be following in the footsteps of Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and other big-time coaches who find it necessary to over-recruit. With the early signing period beginning tomorrow, Waters and many of his peers are playing a numbers game. Here's a look at how things add up for Rutgers:

The Commission's proposal calls for consolidating Rutgers, UMDNJ and NJIT. What does Rutgers give up? Well, it gives up its academic reputation, its strong student base, its dynamic faculty, its ability to secure external research funding, and its name. What does Rutgers get? A below average medical school. Yes, Rutgers would benefit by having a medical school. But the Commission's proposal is not a balanced approach.
