Marcus Mitchell DB, 6'0",200, 4.55, New Britain H.S.
Mike spoke to Marcus' high school coach, Mark Blancato, who has this to say:
"Probably one of the best athletes I have ever coached. Not as big and strong as Justise (Hairston) but a real knock out type of player. He knocked players out of the game a lot. He can really hit. As a senior he had been recruited by UConn, Auburn, UMass and South Carolina and he led the team in tackles but I don't recall exactly how many as of right now, it was between 70-80. He is quick and agile. At the next level he could play corner or safety or as an outside linebacker. He is an all around athlete, he was recruited by some minor league baseball teams and he was a basketball player also. He is a very likeable kid. He plays the tough 'bad ass type' of character but when you get to know him he has a great heart, one of the best kids I have ever coached. He's a great all around athlete who needs a coach to take him under his wing. Someone like Greg Schiano will be great for Marcus."
Big Dog spoke to Marcus and had these notes:
Marcus Mitchell (S, 6'0"-200lbs, 4.55) from Milford Academy in Connecticut verbally committed to play football for Rutgers. He selected Rutgers over Indiana, Missouri, and Hofstra. Last year, he had 4 interceptions, approximately 100 tackles, and 2 blocked punts.
Why did he select Rutgers?
He felt that the opportunity to play early and in the Big East were a big factor. In addition, he liked the proximity to his home and the academic reputation of Rutgers.
He was recruited by Darren Rizzi (RB coach) and Scott Lakatos (DB coach).
Although he has not taken his official visit, he has been on campus on a few occasions and likes the facilities. He plans on taking his official visit on 1/17/2002 or the first available time weekend in January.
How much eligibility does he have and when will he enrolled?
Mitchell has full eligibility, five years to play four years. He plans to enroll in January 2003, thereby giving him the ability to immediate compete for a starting position.
Note: Mitchell was a school teammate of current Rutgers target Justise Hairston at New Britain High School in New Britain, Connecticut.
