Knights Host First Junior of 2009

Recruiting never ends. On January 17th, Rutgers will welcome over 60 Juniors to their first Junior Day of 2009. As the 2010 recruiting season takes shape, many of these names will be common to Rutgers and fans of high school recruiting.

The next recruiting class starts to take form earlier and earlier every year. Although Rutgers is continuously recruiting prospects, they got an early start on the 2010 class with the commitment of Betim Bujari. He will be among the more than 60 attendees for the first junior day of 2009. Bujari attended the Scarlet Knights high school football camp as a rising junior. His display of strength, toughness, balance and quickness of enough to garner an early offer which he took only a few months to accept.

Along with Bujari, a number of the visitors already have Rutgers scholarship offers in hand. At 6'1"-200lbs with a 4.45 forty, Jordan Thomas holds early offers from Rutgers and Pittsburgh. Although he will likely play safety in college, he amassed more than 1,000 yards rushing along with 399 yards receiving.

Rutgers will look for build pipelines at a few schools by signing two or more players from the same school in consecutive years. The first is RB Jamaal Jackson who is a teammate of two of Rutgers recent commitments, Jamil and Jamal Merril. The 5'9"-165lbs speedster was very productive as a junior with 1,577 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns on 161 carries. Corey Brown is the teammate of heralded Rutgers commitment Tom Savage. Brown will be among the most highly recruited players in the northeast.

The group of attendees includes brothers of former and current Scarlet Knights. Nate Smith is the brother of former Scarlet Knight and Philadelphia Eagles Tight End LJ Smith. The younger Smith is a standout on both sides of the ball. But he will likely find a home at the LB position in college. Last season, he accounted for more than 80 tackles with 10 for losses. Robert Forst is the brother of the Scarlet Knights starting right guard Art Forst. Although Robert is a few inches shorter, at 6'5", he does possess good size and technique.

The group is not "short" on linemen as it boosts Dan Foose (6'6") and Anthony Wilkens (6'7") nor does it lack speed with J.T. Tartacoff having been clocked at a 4.34, Jamaal Jackson and Corey Davis at 4.4.

SOR will have reactions and feedback from the Junior Day in the coming days. Stay Tuned.
