The matchup- University of Virginia (4-2) vs. Rutgers (5-2), 8 p.m. today at Louis Brown Athletic Center (WCTC 1450 AM, WOR 710-AM, WRSU 88.7 FM).
RUTGERS TIPOFF

Sure, he broke a streak of Billets in the Rutgers' backcourt at six years, when it was supposed to last eight. And yes, when he steps on the Louis Brown Athletic Center floor tonight, he won't be wearing the uniform his brother Geoff did, the uniform his parents cheered, the uniform he pledged to wear.

Conventional wisdom says when Billet, now a junior guard at Virginia, comes onto the court where he spent his first two years of college, he'll be buffeted by boos, hisses, and general derision. Yet somehow, Billet is counting on conventional wisdom being wrong. The traitor label, he hopes, is passé.

The uniform has changed, but the man inside remains the same. Todd Billet, who transfered from Rutgers to Virginia in April 2001, makes his return to the Louis Brown Athletic Center tonight.

He still wears No.‚22, still has that same sweet jumper and still is one classy guy.

"My grandmother played the biggest role in my life," said Coleman, "taking me off the street and making me go to school. I was never a guy who wanted to go to school. She forced me every day to go to school. I had so much love and respect for her, and I saw how much it hurt her when I wasn't going, I had no choice but to go.

"She's my backbone. I would do anything for her."

Looking at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The fans who bothered to show up at University Hall last night weren't pleased with what they saw from the home team. Two nights after the Virginia Cavaliers struggled to beat East Tennessee State, they barely got past Gardner-Webb, an Atlantic Sun Conference team in its first full season of Division I basketball.

CHARLOTTESVILLE - It's early-season matchups with teams like Gardner-Webb that generally allow ACC teams to take a look at their bench. Virginia would have been lost without its bench Thursday night.  Reserves Derrick Byars and Nick Vander Laan combined to score 37 points as UVa held off the Bulldogs 72-65 at University Hall.

Women's Basketball Recruiting

PATERSON - Chris Dailey, the associate head coach of defending women's basketball national champion Connecticut, visited Eastside girls' basketball practice last Thursday. Georgetown head coach Patrick Knapp was there, too. The Huskies and the Hoyas want what just about every other Division I program in the nation wants: Ghosts' star Essence Carson.

Carson is the total package. It's not just that she can dunk a basketball. She has a straight-A average, plays the piano passionately and is an All-County volleyball player, too. Thoughtful, intelligent, articulate and shy, she is just a bit overwhelmed by all of the attention directed her way.

Big East Sports - Huge Blow to Pitt

Saying he could not ignore his heart, Steve Pederson left Pitt yesterday to accept the athletic director's job at his alma mater, Nebraska.

Pederson, 45, has been the athletic director at Pitt since October 1996 and oversaw huge changes and improvements, particularly in football, men's basketball and the school's facilities. He will start his new position Jan. 1 at Nebraska, replacing Bill Byrne, who left to go to Texas A&M.

Steve Pederson takes Nebraska's AD job; Boehm interim replacement

LINCOLN, Neb. - Minutes after being named the new athletic director at the University of Nebraska on Friday, Steve Pederson started mending fences with football fans who felt alienated by his predecessor, Bill Byrne.

"We have the greatest fans in the world at Nebraska, but I want to remind you that our historic success is the result of 1.7 million Nebraskans playing as one," he said.
