Becoming A National Recruit

Shakim Phillips is quickly becoming a household name to many recruiting analysts around the country. Let's face it; he is a man amongst boys. At 6-foot-2 190 pounds, the humble playmaker out of Depaul Catholic H.S. (NJ) is truly beginning to turn heads. What separates Phillips from many other wide receiver prospects is his physical nature and ability to adjust to the football in mid air.

Currently Phillips appears to be the best receiver in the state of New Jersey for 2010. His playing style is arguably compatible to that of Terrell Owens. He can do whatever he wants on the football field whether it be wide receiver screens, running perfect post, slant, or fade routes, catching the ball in traffic, adjusting to jump balls and either running over or pulling away from defenders. Many of the things he does cannot be taught. He is purely an athletic thoroughbred.

"I just try to catch every ball thrown around me. It doesn't matter if it is high or low. I also work hard and concentrate on my route running and getting better", said Phillips. This philosophy led to 40 receptions, 770 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2008. He also had a kick return for a score.

It's no surprise that just about every collegiate program in the country has taken notice. At this early stage, Shakim already has offers from Pitt, UCONN, Duke, Syracuse and one in the mail that he didn't want to mention until he secured it. He is getting a lot of attention from Tennessee, Georgia, Iowa, Arizona, Boston College, Oregon and Rutgers as well. As for his feelings about Rutgers, Phillips stated, "I like RU. They stress family which I'm all for. They also have good facilities".

The All- Northern Hills performer was also selected as the Best Positional Player at the Chuck Mound Challenge. Phillips plans to showcase his 4.53 forty speed and gritty determination at many camps around the country this off-season.
