Rutgers Defeats Delaware State 54-41

Not a spectacular win but another "W" in the early season bag. Ricky Shields took up the slack for Jerome Coleman and led the Knights to victory.

If Rutgers thought that Delaware State was going to be a laugher the Knights were in for a surprise. While the Hornets could not score in the opening minutes of the game neither could the Knights. In fact, after ten minutes were gone in the game RU held onto a scant 8-5 lead.

And it didn't get better. Despite scoring only three field goals in the first half, the Hornets were clearly still in the game at half time as RU could only manage to take a 19-10 lead into the locker room.

Half time highlights, there were none.

Kareem Wright led all scorers at the half with 6 points. Jerome Coleman had none.

The Knights shot .269 in the first half while Delaware State shot .150 from the field.

Rutgers opened the second half with a Ricky Shield "three" and while the Knights didn't dominate, that shot was the beginning of a slow but sure separation of the Knights from Delaware State. Led by the shooting of Ricky Shields and a good foul shooting by Cortez Davis the Knights opened up a 16 point lead with a little over 10 minutes  to go in the game and cruised from thereon out.

The Knights cleared the bench before taking the victory 54-41.

Rutgers improves to 7-3.

Ricky Shields led Rutgers with 14 points. Cortez Davis and Kareem Wright added 8 points each.
