Ultra-Competitive CB in the Spotlight

Damien Thomas of East Orange H.S. (NJ) is a tough kid who has overcome rough surroundings in order to achieve a good amount of success on the football field. The 5'9 170 lb. standout CB is as intense as they come in regards to competition. There aren't many high school Jr.'s who can completely lock up receivers and make terrific plays on the ball at its highest point.

Thomas has definitely displayed those skills and is set to become a key contributor wherever he ends up on the next level.

Damien Thomas loves the game. He stated, "I can't wait for next season. I am normally a calm and humble kid but when I put the pads on, I am really competitive. My coach also said he likes to play me in the secondary because I am one of the smartest guys on the defense".

Thomas also excels as a wide receiver. He finished 2008 with 36 receptions for 675 yards and 11 TD's. "Post corner and fade routes my favorites. At 5'9, I still have the hops to go up and get it. I also have the ability to run the football", said Damien. His offensive prowess earned him WR MVP when just a sophomore at the National Underclassman Combine.

Defensively, Thomas accounted for 27 solos, 1 pick and 2 forced fumbles. His overalls efforts were awarded with a 1st team All-Essex County bid and consideration amongst the elite players in the state of New Jersey.

Damien has a huge advantage in regards to tutelage than most kids. He often works out with current Rutgers CB Al-Majid Hutchins. "He comes down often and shares the different techniques that he has learned on the next level with me. Being that he is such a complete corner, I am able to learn beyond my years and prepare for what is to come", said Thomas.

Thomas has received interest from Rutgers, Syracuse, Tennessee, Clemson, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Virginia, Oregon and Nebraska to name a few. He has yet to grow tired of the recruiting process in fact he loves it. He stated, "I have a couple boxes full of letters. I love it. I will forever save these boxes to remind myself of how relevant I was to so many people at this point in time. It's special and makes me commit even harder to academics and athletics". There are no current offers as of yet though.

As for the Scarlet Knights Damien mentioned, "Rutgers is one of my favorites along with Tennessee, Clemson and Syracuse. I met with Greg Schiano and enjoyed it. He seems like a good guy. I liked the atmosphere and had fun at the 7-on-7 there. I would like to meet with the coordinators some time soon to see what they are like. I plan to attend spring practice as well as the spring game". SOR will keep you informed as to Rutgers involvement.
