McEvoy Takes the Reigns

At 6'5 195 lbs., So. Tanner McEvoy of Bergen Catholic H.S. (NJ) is a standout in more ways than one. If the last name sounds familiar to you, it is because his brother, Colin, is currently a safety for the Scarlet Knights who has made a huge contribution to special teams. We first came to notice Tanner at the Badger Sports 7-on-7 where he stood out at Wide Receiver and safety.

Tanner ended up on the same team as Brandon Hill and stood neck and neck with him in the almost-6'6 department. This upcoming season, Tanner is being converted from his comfortable position of wide receiver to the position that he is most suited to play on the next level which is quarterback.

"I am excited to play quarterback next season. I have an extremely strong arm and am very tall which should help somewhat. I also have solid skills as a runner being that I always played running back growing up.", said Tanner McEvoy.

The 1st Team All- NNJILC selection is poised for a breakout season at a position which is unusual for one to switch to at this point in their high school career.

In 2008, as a receiver and safety, Tanner compiled 605 yards receiving and 3 TD's on 53 receptions along with 50 tackles and 3 interceptions on defense. Tanner is definitely a stat sheet stuff if I have ever seen one.

McEvoy claims, "I get my athleticism from basketball. I currently do not play for my high school but I do participate in AAU. I feel it helps me with my agility. I took this past season off because I wanted to work on gaining some weight but I plan to return to the hardwood next season".

Tanner is currently receiving interest from Rutgers, Maryland, UCLA, Florida, Penn State and Boston College, although he holds no offers at this premature point. Location, football program success and support for academics are his main concerns in selecting a school.

As for RU, he mentioned, "Being that my brother goes to school there (Rutgers), I have been around the program for a while. Therefore, I know the coaching staff quite well. I like Rutgers. It is a good school and the team is getting better".

McEvoy plans to attend Rutgers Camp this summer. SOR will keep you informed as to his progression.
