Taj Watkins Can Play Too

Jr. DE Taj Watkins of Piscataway can really move. The 6'0 210 lb prospect is looking to make a name for himself amongst the incredible amount of potential D1A prospects from Piscataway H.S. (NJ). We first came to notice Taj at the Chuck Mound Challenge where he showed the necessary skills to be named #1 Defensive Lineman in Camp.

Taj Watkins, who ran a 4.74 40 at the event, looked extremely smooth through drills and dominated most of his 1-on-1's. The fluidity of his movement truly made him stand out. Now, he is ready to translate his off-season success to the football field.

"My goals for next year are to set the tone for my teammates, have a more productive season personally and ultimately win another championship. I attended the Chuck Mound challenge to compete against the best and did well. Now its time to do it on the football field", said Watkins.

The All-Junior Defensive Line selection ended 2008 with 3 sacks in the championship game against rival Hunterdon Central. Taj stated, "Hunterdon Central (NJ) took it to us 2 years ago, so it was nice to meet up with them this past season in the championship game and beat them 38-0. I guess they thought they were just gonna roll over us but they had another thing coming".

This momentum carried him to the start of his successful post-season.

Taj spoke a bit about his post-season and style of play. "At camps, I have been able to display my quickness. I am an aggressive player with the speed to get around offensive linemen". In 2008, his speed on the outside led to a total of 5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles off the edge. Watkins claims a shuttle time of 4.4 seconds.

Although Watkins is currently slotted at the DE position, his destination on the next level is likely linebacker or fullback. He has an incredibly athletic build and the speed to produce at those positions. Currently, the only school onto Watkins is Syracuse. Taj has recently taken a trip to visit the Orangemen and likes what they are about.

In regards to RU he stated, "I like Rutgers. I wish they would take a closer look into their backyard though. We have a lot of truly talented athletes on the squad who are quality people whom they should look at. I would be interested if they showed me some attention".

Watkins also plays basketball for a recreational league as well as wrestles for the chiefs where he went 15-4 on the mat. This well- rounded young athlete is definitely poised for a successful senior campaign. SOR will keep you informed on the progression of his recruitment.
